Amazingly, the Pixies' debut EP, Come on Pilgrim, was compiled from the quickly, inexpensively made demo tape -- paid for by Black Francis' dad -- the band made at Boston's legendary Fort Apache studio soon after they formed. 4AD was so taken with the tape that they released eight of the songs as this mini-album. It's easy to see why they were so impressed: The Pixies' essential sound.

4. Jan 01,  · Songs like Caribou, Vamos, Holiday Song, Nimrod's Son, Ed is Dead and Levitate Me all became Pixies concert staples and would belong on any Pixies "best of" compilation. The amazing thing about this effort is how fully developed the Pixies sounded even at this young age. All of the classic Pixies elements are present on Come On Pilgrim/5(64).

7. Ed Is Dead is from the Pixies' debut album Come On Pilgrim, and was a standout song on their demo album that led to the discovery of the band. The demo cassette was recorded at Fort Apache Studios in Boston, and eventually became known as The Purple Tape.
